Physiotherapists play an important role in the healing process by working with Clients to improve strength, balance, comfort, and confidence. Regular treatments that include stretching exercises and routines can restore lost mobility and function and make every day living much more manageable. Physiotherapy treatments may also help those with cancer, chronic lung disease, musculoskeletal conditions like carpal tunnel, and help clients recover from stroke. Regular stretching is helpful for overall physical wellness, too. Integracare’s Registered Physiotherapists can aid you or your family member after an injury or to help prevent conditions or lessen their severity.
We provide high quality Toronto home healthcare services for your loved one in the comfort of their home. Our care plans are individualized and focus on promoting joyful living and independence in the home, in residence, or at the hospital.
The following are a few basic stretches that can be done in the home to help with mobility and motion. These can all be performed sitting in a chair or while in bed. Always ask the advice of an in-home Care Provider before attempting any new stretching routine. Our Registered Physiotherapists will teach proper, safe movements, and what not to do, to prevent injury or worsen a condition. Medical practitioners should always be notified if there are any new pains or changes in general health. These descriptions are provided for informational purposes to describe the types of activities and routines that can be added to you or your loved one’s day with the guidance of a professional. We are always here to answer questions, so give us a call anytime to find out more.
Sit up straight in a chair or over the side of the bed, look straight ahead, and slowly tilt the side of the head toward the right shoulder until a stretch is felt on the left side of the neck. Repeat this motion, switching to the left shoulder. Repeat a few times with gentle motions on each side. To stretch the front and back of the neck, look straight ahead and slowly tilt the chin downward toward the chest until a stretch is felt at the back of the neck. Slowly raise the chin up again. Then, lift the chin into the air until a stretch is felt in the front of the neck and slowly lower back down again.
Shoulder Circles & Rolls
While seated and sitting up straight, place the hands on the shoulders and move the elbows in forward circles for several repetitions. Then circle them backward for the same number. When the shoulders are warmed up, place hands at the sides, shrug both shoulders up toward the ears, and then rotate them back, down, forward, and return back to the upward position again. Reverse the direction.
Knee Lifts
Sit up with a straight back and feet flat on the floor. Slowly lift the left knee toward the chest and lower to the floor after a brief pause. Repeat with the right knee. Perform several repetitions on each side. Increase intensity slightly by holding the knee up for a few seconds before lowering.
Physiotherapy is often a part of a broader, yet individualized, care plan. Our Registered Physiotherapists work alongside other Integracare Caregivers to develop a plan with Clients and their families to improve quality of life – a part of which is increased strength, flexibility, and balance from stretching routines.
