How It Works
Live-in care gives your loved one the familiarity of a Health Care Aide who gets to know how they like things done, from their morning routine and meals to personal care and getting around the home. Health Care Aide (HCA) is the Manitoba title for caregivers who help with bathing, dressing, meals and getting around.
At night, the Health Care Aide has a private bedroom and scheduled time to sleep, while remaining in the home. Come morning, someone your loved one knows is already there to start the day, including on Winnipeg mornings when snow and ice make getting around difficult.
Integracare coordinates two Health Care Aides so your loved one has a familiar Health Care Aide even on scheduled days off. Keeping the same two Health Care Aides provides continuity and a familiar routine throughout the week. Integracare offers live-in care in Winnipeg and surrounding areas.
Talk through your optionsWho It Suits
Live-in care fits best when help is needed at many points in the day, but the nights are usually calm. If nights are the harder part, 24-hour home care in Winnipeg may fit better, and a short break may call for respite care in Winnipeg instead.
Your loved one needs a hand from getting up to going to bed, with meals, washing, and moving around in between.
Your loved one usually sleeps until morning, or needs help only now and then after bedtime.
Your Family wants the same person in the house most of the week, someone who gets to know your loved one's habits.
Integracare's dementia care in Winnipeg provides a familiar Health Care Aide who can adapt communication, offer reassurance, and encourage your loved one to stay involved in daily routines and activities.
Day and Night
Both options provide a Health Care Aide in the home day and night. The important difference is what your loved one needs overnight: live-in Health Care Aides have scheduled sleep time, while 24-hour care keeps someone awake and available.

Screening and Matching
Having someone live in your loved one's house is a big step, and you deserve to know exactly who that person is before they move in. Every Health Care Aide is screened with references, a criminal record check that includes a vulnerable sector check, and an in-person interview before we ever introduce them to your Family. We also match for personality, routine and the things that matter to your loved one, like language or shared interests, and if the fit isn't right, we can adjust who's placed with your loved one.
Hands-On Care
Your loved one's Health Care Aide provides daily personal care, companionship and household assistance while respecting their preferences and encouraging independence.
Assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and bedtime routines, always respecting your loved one's dignity and comfort.
Preparing favourite meals and snacks while accommodating dietary needs, food preferences and established mealtimes.
Help moving safely between rooms, getting in and out of bed or chairs, navigating stairs and enjoying walks outdoors.
Gentle reminders to take prescribed medications according to the care plan.
Laundry, changing bed linens, tidying living spaces and keeping frequently used areas free of clutter.
Meaningful conversation, favourite hobbies, music, games, reading and outings that bring enjoyment to your loved one's day.
Before the First Day
During the initial care assessment, Integracare helps your Family prepare for a live-in Health Care Aide, including sleeping arrangements, accessibility and home safety.
A comfortable bedroom with a closing door where the Health Care Aide can sleep and enjoy scheduled rest periods.
Closet or drawer space for the HCA's clothing and belongings.
Access to a shared or private bathroom throughout their stay.
Space for food storage and meal preparation, with arrangements discussed before services begin.
Clear walkways, adequate nighttime lighting and any mobility or accessibility considerations identified during the in-home assessment.

Clinical Oversight
We want your Family to feel comfortable with the care your loved one receives at home. It begins with a free in-home assessment, where a Registered Nurse (RN) gets to know your loved one, their health needs, personal care routines and how they prefer their day to go.
Our Registered Nursing Coordinators oversee the Health Care Aides and review the personalized care plan as their needs change, including after a recent hospital stay. If something concerns you or our Health Care Aide, our nursing team is available 24/7 to answer questions and provide guidance.
You can also stay involved through Integracare's Family Room, where you and invited Family members can read updated notes made by our Health Care Aides and Registered Nurses, and check daily schedules, even when you cannot be there in person.
Government Services
You don't have to figure out how public and private home care work together on your own. Our Registered Nursing Coordinator will guide you through your options, and we can set up private live-in care to complement the public home care services your loved one already receives.
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority delivers publicly funded home care through its Home Care Intake Line at (204) 788-8330, where a case coordinator works out a plan with your Family if your loved one qualifies.
If your loved one is already on a personal care home waitlist, private live-in care can cover the time in between. The WRHA Long Term Care Access Centre, (204) 940-8670, manages those waitlists through paneling, and our Integracare Winnipeg team can explain how our private care works with WRHA services.
Speak with our Winnipeg home care team about your loved one's daily needs, overnight care and how a live-in Health Care Aide would become part of their routine.

When a Winnipeg hospital discharges your parent before public home care can start, there are practical ways to bridge the gap safely. Here's what families typically do.

A short hospital stay for a hip fracture or infection can stretch into weeks when a safe discharge plan isn't ready. Here's why that delay is risky, and how home care can help families avoid it.
Before You Decide
It mostly comes down to your loved one's nights. A live-in Health Care Aide sleeps and helps now and then if needed, while 24-hour care means Health Care Aides working in shifts with one awake until morning. A Registered Nurse will ask about wandering, falls or restless nights during the free assessment and recommend whichever fits, and the plan can switch from one to the other later if the Client's nights change.
Yes, regular days off are built into every live-in plan from the start. A relief Health Care Aide takes over on those days, and wherever possible we send the same relief Health Care Aide each time, so your loved one has two familiar faces instead of a rotating cast of strangers. The relief HCA is briefed on what's changed before they arrive, so the routine carries on without your loved one having to re-explain anything.
Booking and paying for live-in care happens directly with Integracare, separately from anything WRHA already provides. If your loved one already receives WRHA visits, mention it at the free assessment so the Registered Nurse can build the live-in schedule around those existing appointments rather than overlapping with them. Your loved one keeps whatever WRHA hours they're assigned, and the live-in Health Care Aide fills in around them.
If something comes up overnight, such as a new symptom, increased confusion or a question about medication, your loved one's HCA can call our nursing team for guidance. Our nurses are available by phone 24/7, for any questions you may have. For medical emergencies, always call 9-1-1 first. The Registered Nurse overseeing your loved one's care also reviews changes in their condition, including concerns that come up repeatedly, and adjusts their care plan as needed.
Yes, live-in care continues straight through all 9 of Manitoba's general holidays, Christmas Day and New Year's Day included, along with Louis Riel Day in February and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. We book relief HCAs for those dates well in advance, so your loved one's regular Health Care Aide still gets their rest days and nobody is scrambling to cover a shift at the last minute.
