Palliative care in Winnipeg

Life-Limiting Illness and the Wish to Stay Home

Care at this stage turns to comfort and dignity. Many people hope to spend this time in their own house, and their family wants to make that possible.

Our HCAs give the hands-on care, from bathing and turning in bed to staying through the night so relatives can sleep. A Registered Nurse assesses the person at home before the first visit, writes the plan and adjusts it as health needs shift. Our nurses support clients and caregivers 24/7.

Integracare has cared for Canadian families since 1991. Dennis Fancy, Director of Integracare Winnipeg, leads the local team. Our Winnipeg home care page tells you more about us.

At the bedside

What Our Health Care Aides Do on Each Visit

The work follows the plan our nurse writes with you and updates as the illness progresses.

Washing and grooming

Bed baths, mouth care, hair, shaving and fresh clothes, done slowly and the way the person wants.

Turning in bed

Moving the person often, with pillows placed to ease pressure on skin and joints. The aide tells the nurse about any change in the skin.

Eating and drinking on the person's terms

As appetite fades, the aide offers small portions, favourite foods and sips of water whenever they are wanted.

Notes the family can read

After each visit, aides record breathing, sleep, restlessness and any signs of pain. Invited relatives can read these entries in the Family Room, our online portal. The aide tells the nurse when something changes.

A calm, tidy room

Fresh sheets, a clear bedside, light laundry and the dishes from the day.

Company and quiet

Reading aloud, favourite music, a hand to hold, or sitting nearby while the person sleeps.

A caregiver in navy scrubs settles the pillow and tucks in the quilt for an older woman resting in bed. She smiles up from her pillow in a lamplit bedroom on a rainy night, with a glass of water and reading glasses on the nightstand.

Rest for the family

Overnight Company and Breaks During the Day

An HCA can stay until morning to turn and settle the person, bring water and keep notes for the nurse while everyone else sleeps.

A block of a few hours lets a spouse or adult child lie down, keep a medical appointment of their own or get out of the house. Our respite care in Winnipeg page covers planned time away. To have caregivers with the person around the clock, working in shifts, see 24-hour home care in Winnipeg.

Invited relatives who live out of town can check the visit schedule and notes in the Family Room, and call our Winnipeg line at any hour.

The public program

The WRHA Palliative Care Program and Private Hours

WRHA Home Care runs palliative care as one of its specialty programs. Once a person is registered, a WRHA palliative care coordinator keeps reviewing their needs and arranges public services.

Care from Integracare is arranged directly with your family, paid for privately and added to any public plan. Tell us when the program's nurses and aides are due, and we schedule our hours around them. Families are given the number of their palliative care coordinator, and can share it with our nurse so both teams stay in step.

Agree with the palliative team ahead of time on who to call near the end of life, and keep the signed Goals of Care form and any health care directive close to the bed.

Common questions

Palliative Care Questions From Winnipeg Families

Does someone need to be registered with the WRHA Palliative Care Program before Integracare can help?

No. We arrange private care directly with your family, and our nurse's assessment looks at what the person needs at home. Registration is still worth raising with the doctor. Riverview's 3 East and Jocelyn House admit only registered patients.

Who do we call if something changes in the night?

If the person is registered with the WRHA Palliative Care Program, call the round-the-clock program contact your family was given for pain, breathing trouble or agitation that is not settling, or the home care nurse or doctor. For the HCA shift, the private plan or help deciding who to call, phone our nurses at (204) 977-7575, 24/7, holidays included.

Can you help when someone leaves a palliative unit to come home?

Yes. Riverview says that once a person's symptoms are managed, they may be discharged home from its palliative care community. Call us while the move is being planned, and together we will work out the hours for the first nights back.

Who will be on the care team?

A Registered Nurse writes the care plan and oversees it. Screened, trained Health Care Aides give the hands-on help. Every Winnipeg HCA holds CPR and First Aid, and follows the person's documented goals of care, including a decision not to attempt CPR.

How much does private palliative care cost?

The price depends on the hours and the kind of help the care plan recommends. After the free in-home assessment, we explain it to your family.
