Nursing Care at Home in Winnipeg

Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) visit to help with recovery, medications and long-term health conditions.

An RN writes every care plan, and you can reach nursing support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Free in-home assessment. No obligation.

Clinical Care Without Leaving the House

An RN or LPN comes to you at times agreed with the family. The nurse checks the person's health, manages medicines, keeps watch on long-term conditions and helps people recover after surgery or a hospital stay. Each visit follows a written care plan.

Every RN working in the province must be registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM), and our Winnipeg RNs are. Our LPNs are registered with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM).

A nurse leads each client's care in every city Integracare serves. Our local team covers Winnipeg and surrounding area.

What a Nursing Visit Covers

The RN who does the assessment decides which of these the care plan includes and how often each one happens.

A health assessment at home

The RN visits for a free assessment and reviews health history, medications, mobility and the house itself. Then they write the care plan with you and oversee it as needs change.

Medication management and teaching

Nurses compare the medicines on hand with current prescriptions, set up weekly pill organizers and explain what each drug is for. Relatives learn which side effects to report and when to phone us.

Long-term conditions

For someone with heart failure, lung disease or diabetes, a nurse records blood pressure, pulse and other vital signs at each visit. The readings are logged in the notes, where a slow change is easier to spot.

Recovery after surgery or a hospital stay

A nurse goes through the discharge instructions and confirms which prescriptions were started, stopped or changed. They also watch for signs that healing has stalled.

Supervision of Health Care Aides

Health Care Aides (HCAs) handle personal care such as bathing and dressing. In Manitoba they are unregulated care providers, which means no professional college governs them. On our plans, a nurse sets their tasks and oversees the work.

A nurse in navy scrubs watches an older man's steps as he pushes a four-wheeled walker down his hallway, an overnight bag by the front door behind them.

After a hospital stay

Planning the First Weeks Home

Call us while your parent is still on the ward. Our RN can go over the written discharge instructions with you and set the first nursing visits before the move home. Share those dates with the hospital team, so they fit around any home care it helps arrange.

Once your parent is home, the nurse watches how they move and eat, and keeps track of follow-up appointments. For rehabilitation after a stroke, see stroke care in Winnipeg.

Home care in Manitoba

Private Nursing Alongside the Public System

Public home care in Winnipeg comes from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA). Families book Integracare nursing directly and pay for it themselves. It can fill gaps in a WRHA care plan.

Who qualifies

To be assessed for WRHA home care, a person must live in Manitoba, be registered with Manitoba Health and need more help to stay safely at home than family and community supports can give.

What WRHA nursing provides

For eligible clients, services can include nursing care and medication assistance. Under provincial policy, that nursing comes from RNs and LPNs. A case coordinator, who is a health care professional, does the assessment, and WRHA decides the amount and type of service.

While an assessment is pending

From 2021 to 2025, the median wait for a home care assessment in the Winnipeg health region ranged from 14 to 16 days, according to WRHA data reported by CBC in April 2026. Private nursing can be booked without a WRHA assessment.

Palliative nursing

Once a person is registered with the WRHA Palliative Care Program, a coordinator from the program arranges home care services. These may include visits from specially trained palliative care nurses. See palliative care in Winnipeg for the private support we offer.

RN, LPN and HCA: 3 Distinct Roles

Manitoba has a separate regulatory college for each nursing profession: RNs, LPNs and registered psychiatric nurses. The third group mostly cares for people with mental health, addiction or neurodevelopmental needs. Health Care Aides have no college.

Questions & Answers

Nursing Care Questions From Winnipeg Families

Does Manitoba Health license private home care companies?

Our RNs are registered with CRNM and our LPNs with CLPNM, and an RN oversees every plan. Manitoba Health does not license private home care companies. It says they must meet the same business licensing and labour standards as any other firm.

Who decides whether an RN or an LPN visits?

The RN who does the assessment. The care plan names which visits need an RN and which an LPN can take. In Manitoba, LPNs are regulated professionals, and the education to become one is a 2-year diploma.

Does Self and Family Managed Care pay for nursing?

No. Self and Family Managed Care (SFMC) is a WRHA option for non-professional help, such as attendant or homemaker services. The client or a family member manages the services the person was assessed as needing. Nursing stays with WRHA Home Care, and SFMC clients remain eligible for it.
