A Caregiver often learns the details of a Client’s day that cannot be fully captured on a care plan.

They become familiar with how a Client likes to start the morning, how much help they usually need, and how they communicate when something does not feel right. Over time, those observations help Caregivers adapt support to the Client and recognize when something has changed.

On August 18, Integracare Home Care turned the attention toward the people providing that care at our annual Family BBQ and Caregiver Appreciation Event.

This year’s gathering also gave us two special achievements to celebrate: national recognition for Nekola L. and a Dementia Care education award for Evangeline.

An Afternoon Dedicated to Our Caregivers

The Integracare Caregiver Appreciation BBQ brings Caregivers and team members together outside their regular care routines to recognize the people supporting Clients and Families every day.

It reflects a principle that has remained important as Integracare has grown from approximately 55 Caregivers to more than 500: taking care of the people who take care of our Clients.

Recognition is one part of that commitment. Education, mentorship, and professional support give Caregivers additional opportunities to develop throughout their careers.

Celebrating Nekola L.’s National Caregiving Award

One of the most special moments at this year’s BBQ was celebrating Nekola L. as a recipient of a 2026 HomeEquity Bank National Caregiving Award.

More than 350 nominations were submitted for the 2026 National Caregiving Awards. Nekola was one of just seven Caregivers selected across Canada and received a $1,500 award.

The Kind of Care Clients Ask to Have Back

Since joining Integracare in 2019, Nekola has become the kind of Caregiver Clients and Families are genuinely happy to welcome back into their homes.

She is compassionate, dependable, and willing to go the extra mile when a Client needs her. Again and again, Integracare receives positive feedback about Nekola’s care, followed by one of the best compliments a Caregiver can receive: a request for her to come back.

That trust says a great deal about the relationships she builds. Home care takes place in someone’s personal space and becomes part of the rhythms of everyday life. Having a Caregiver who is familiar, reliable, and takes the time to get to know the person can make receiving support feel much more natural.

Nekola brings that same commitment to her fellow Caregivers through Integracare’s Caregiver mentorship program, where she shares the experience she has developed over the years. She has also previously received the Integracare Caregiver of Excellence Award.

Her national recognition celebrates something we value deeply at Integracare: Caregivers who build genuine relationships while helping Clients maintain their independence and joyful living wherever they call home.

Bringing Dementia Care Education Into the Home

Continued education becomes especially important when a Caregiver is supporting a Client living with dementia.

Dementia can change how someone communicates, responds to their surroundings, or moves through a routine they have followed for years. What worked well before may need to be approached differently as a Client’s needs and abilities change.

Integracare supports this learning in part through our long-standing partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, which provides professional education including Dementia Foundations, U-First!, Advanced, Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) and Palliative Care in Dementia.

The education provides Caregivers with knowledge and practical approaches. Getting to know the Client helps them understand when and how to use them.

Making Communication Easier

As dementia progresses, a Client may need more time to find the right words, follow a conversation, or work through the steps of a familiar routine. A Caregiver who understands these changes can adjust how they communicate instead of rushing the moment.

The Alzheimer Society of Canada’s communication strategies for people living with dementia recommend approaches such as reducing distractions, speaking face-to-face, and allowing time for the person to respond.

For an Integracare Caregiver, that could mean slowing down while helping a Client get ready for the day, offering one step at a time and allowing them to do the parts they can still manage. The support follows the Client’s abilities and pace.

Understanding What a Behaviour May Be Communicating

Dementia Care education also helps Caregivers look beyond the behaviour they can see.

If a Client asks the same question several times, for example, simply correcting them may miss what they need in that moment. The Alzheimer Society’s guidance on understanding repetitive behaviours in dementia encourages Caregivers to consider what may be behind the repetition.

Is the Client looking for reassurance? Has the room become too busy? Could something be uncomfortable?

By noticing those cues, a Caregiver can respond more thoughtfully, whether that means offering reassurance, creating a quieter environment, or returning to a familiar activity. This is where education and knowing the Client come together: the Caregiver has the knowledge to understand what may be changing and the familiarity to adapt care to the person.

Recognizing Evangeline’s Commitment to Dementia Care Education

That commitment to learning gave us another special moment to recognize at this year’s BBQ.

Evangeline received the Nevvon Dementia Care Education Award and $1,000, recognizing her continued education in Dementia Care.

For us, the recognition is especially meaningful because Caregiver education has such a practical purpose. It gives Caregivers more knowledge to draw on when a Client begins communicating differently, when a familiar routine becomes more difficult, or when another approach may help a Client remain involved in their day.

Evangeline’s award recognizes that willingness to keep learning and bring that knowledge back to the Clients she supports.

Supporting the Caregivers Our Clients Rely On

Our BBQ happens once a year. Supporting Caregivers is something we believe in throughout the year.

Caregiving brings together practical skills, observation, communication, nurse-led supervision, and an understanding of the person receiving support. Caregivers also need people around them they can turn to as Client needs change.
